A term used by Bealwit, the
dragon in the first
Knightmare novella, to describe himself. Later, on
Knightmare itself,
Smirkenorff was referred to as the Great Wyrm. The word
wyrm is an Old English word for a dragon, serpent or snake, with links to
vermis in
Latin,
wurm in Anglo Saxon and
worm in English. It is also present in Wyrmslayer, the name awarded to
Treguard's
sword after he killed Bealwit. 'Great Wyrmslayer' would presumably have been just a tad too immodest.
